Grateful - Week 4

Wow I'm cutting it close!  Here's my list for this week! I'm grateful for... 1. Babies 2. TRAINED lifeguards 3. Mascara and eyeliner  4. Sunscreen 5. Books 6. Water 7. Fruit 8. Blogs 9. Powerstrips 10. Smiles

Sunglasses

As a lifeguard of the City of Orem, part of my uniform when I work the outdoor pool is sunglasses.  My sunglasses are on their forth summer of guarding and it shows.  The screw are falling out and they sport dog chew marks on the side.  They have a classic black frame.  Now I've decided that while black may be the classic "I'm cool" look for sunglasses it lacks any flair or excitement.  Seeing as all of the lifeguards all wear the same basic uniform, sunglasses is the only area of uniform that we can be creative.  My black sunglasses say that I'm boring.  I need something that pops.  I decided on Thursday that white frames are actually pretty rocking when my head guard Josh was sitting on his guard chair looking confident and in control.  Anyway I figure that since I've mentioned him I'll link to him as well. Here's Josh → Click!  (Okay so that's not really Josh; it's just his blog.  I'm sorry to say that by clicking that link Josh will no

Jamba Juice Flavor - Pink Star

So this week's flavor of wonder, by request, was "Pink Star" or "Pink Starburst."  This flavor tastes exactly like it's namesake.  As I sipped the frozen treat I almost expected to feel the chewy texture of starburst to accompany the flavor.  The sugar shock wasn't as bad as last time, but after an original size I still felt a little sick.  I'll probably stick with 16 oz from now on.  Anyway this is a great flavor if you want something a little fun, and much better than the Sour Patch Kid.

Fear of knowledge

Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" from The Republic Socrates: And now, I said, let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened: --Behold! human beings living in a underground cave, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the cave; here they have been from their childhood, and have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire is blazing at a distance, and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way; and you will see, if you look, a low wall built along the way, like the screen which marionette players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets. Glaucon: I see. Socrates: And do you see, I said, men passing along the wall carrying all sorts of vessels, and statues and figures of animals made of wood and stone and various materials, which appear over the wall? Some of them a

Tan Lines

Image
Ahh. Summer has finally arrived in bipolar Utah and with Summer come the inevitability of tan lines.  I don't really get people who obsess over having no tan lines.  I mean I can understand if they're as defined as those above, but otherwise it just shows that you do something other than lie naked in a skin cancer bed.  I love my tan lines.  Being a lifeguard they tend to be fairly noticeable.  My favorite guard tan line is my flip flop line.  Even with my shoes off it still looks like I've got thick flip flop straps across my feet.  I'm also a big fan of the whistle tan line across the back of my neck.  I don't know why, but it just makes me happy.  Another guard tan line that is Scera Pool specific and only applies to the female guards are the little half-moons found on the hips.  The approved swim suit for female guards is very high cut and come right to the base of the hip bone.  In addition to the high cut suit, females also have the option of wearing the short

Jamba Juice Flavor - Sour Patch Kid

So I had always heard that Jamba Juice had a secret menu full of wondrous secretive secret flavors, and being a huge fan of the Jamba I have been itching to get my lips around a straw that could deliver one of those exclusive flavors to my taste buds.  I finally got around to googling (I love how that's an excepted verb now) "Jamba Juice secret menu"  I found a list filled with wonder and magic.  Like a child at Christmas I eagerly read through the menu.  I couldn't wait to try them all.  That was back in February.  I'll admit I put off starting my Jamba adventure, but finally on Monday I had my first taste of secrecy.  After a family game of miniature golf (which I totally won.  My mom wouldn't let me keep score because "someone's feelings would get hurt", so I kept them in my head. Ha!) my family and I headed out for a cool refreshing Jamba Juice.  As we drove towards the fruity haven I thought back to February and the list came to mind.  Final

Soulmate

Incompatible, it don't matter though 'cause someone's bound to hear my cry Speak out if you do You're not easy to find Is it possible Mr. Loveable Is already in my life? Right in front of me Or maybe you're in disguise Who doesn't long for someone to hold Who knows how to love you without being told Somebody tell me why I'm on my own If there's a soulmate for everyone Here we are again, circles never end How do I find the perfect fit There's enough for everyone But I'm still waiting in line Who doesn't long for someone to hold Who knows how to love you without being told Somebody tell me why I'm on my own If there's a soulmate for everyone If there's a soulmate for everyone Most relationships seem so transitory They're all good but not the permanent one Who doesn't long for someone to hold Who knows how to love you without being told Somebody tell me why I'm on my own If there's a soulmate for everyone Who doesn

Driving

So I've just noticed something.  Rather I've just started thinking about something.  When I'm driving with people I generally keep the windows up, the sunroof closed, the music turned low, and the climate at a reasonable temperature.  However, after I've dropped them off or in some other way become the singular passenger of the car I automatically turn my music volume to the maximum of 40, crank the bass and subwoofer up to 6+, roll down my passenger's and driver's windows, open my sunroof, and turn the climate control down to low.  As I drive I belt whatever song is on the radio regardless of my familiarity with it.  If I don't know the lyrics I sing back-up or just make something up, but either way it's always loud.  I love the freedom and feeling the wind in my hair.  However, once I stop to pick up a passenger I turn the music down, turn the bass and subwoofer down to 0, roll up the windows and close the sunroof, and readjust the airflow and temperat

Mother's Day

Mothers are pure in heart; Open arms that welcome children. They show the world love and joy; Helping all along their way. Everyday they serve with love; Reaching for those in need. Some may judge, but they will not for true mothers love unconditionally. "M.O.T.H.E.R.S." -by Whitney Thayne Happy Mother's Day to all of those mothers out there!  How did Mother's Day start anyway?  Don't know?  Well I'm here to answer that question! Mother's Day is an annual holiday that recognizes motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well the positive contributions that mothers make to society. In Canada and the United States, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May; In Mexico Mother's Day is a fixed holiday, occurring on May 10th. Early "Mother's Day" was mostly marked by women's peace groups.  A common early activity was the meeting of groups of mothers whose sons had fought or died on opposite sides of the American Civil War.  In New Yo

Mothers

Seeing as it's Mother's Day I figured that mothers would be excellent people to blog about. We'll start off with a quote by Elder Russel M. Nelson: Many years ago the First Presidency issued a statement that has had a profound and lasting influence upon me. “Motherhood,” they wrote, “is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels." Mothers are next to angels. Now I don't have firsthand experience, but being a mother seems hard. Here's a quote by Elder M. Russel Ballard for those mothers who are feeling discouraged and inadequate: There is no perfect way to be a good mother. Each situation is unique. Each mother has different challenges, different skills and abilities, and certainly different children. The choice is different and unique for each mother and family. Many are able to be 'full-time moms,' at least during the more formative years o

A Woman's Week at the Gym

My mom showed this to me. I kinda tweeked it so it wasn't so creepy. Anyway this is for all of those women who have tried a workout program, but just couldn't really get into it. Dear Diary, For my birthday this year, my daughter (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since being a high school cheerleader 43 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. I called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Brad, who identified himself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swim wear. My daughter seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress. MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00 a.m. Tough to get out of bed, but found it was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Brad waiting for me. He is something of a Greek god - with dark lush hair, danc

Happy Feet Lyrics

"You sheltered me from harm Kept me warm, kept me warm You gave my love to me Set me free, set me free The finest years I ever knew Were all the years I had with you" "Is there someone you know You're lovin them so But taken them all for granted You may lose them one day Someone takes them away And they don't hear the words you long to say" I like these lyrics. Yup... The end.

The Cripple Who is Whole

She was alone and lost. Alive, but barely living She, The Cripple, trudged along In life she saw darkness. Filled with grief and pain She, The Cripple, trudged along. She resented herself. Trapped in a self-made prison She, The Cripple, trudged along. He found her. Offering love and acceptance He, a friend of her heart, embraced her. Love healed her. With a stitched heart beating She, The Cripple Who is Whole, runs free. "The Cripple Who is Whole" -by Whitney Thayne

Bare Feet

I love running around bare-foot. Every situation is enhanced with bare feet. If you have bare feet you can feel the warm, fine beach sand between your toes. When your feet are bare you can feel the grass tickling your feet. Running water is much more enjoyed if your feet are free to enjoy the rushing cool liquid. If your feet are bare you can use almost every sense to take in your surroundings while standing. My feet love being free!

Job interviews

Image
I wish all job interviews were like this.  You know pretty much upfront whether or not you were getting the job.  And if you really were qualified, instead of trying to tell them in words, which rarely get across exactly what you mean, you could show your potential employer right there and feel confident that you're both on the same page.  I think this would be good.  And I like to build chairs so working at IKEA would be fun if this was the extent of the job.  Yup... The end.

Hair knots

Once upon a time I had a roommate named Klesey except her real name was Kelsey and I'm too lazy too hit backspace. She was thirty, flirty, and thriving except for the thirty part. So she was flirty and thriving. In her flirty she would twist her hair and tie knots in it with one hand. I liked to watch her tie them and I tried and tried to mimic her fingers, but lacked the dexterity. She tried to instruct me in the hair tying ways, but I couldn't for the life of me tie a flippin' knot! Finally, yesterday as I was driving, it just came to me! I tied and tied again and again. It wasn't Kelsey's way, but my own design. Her technique involves pinching, flipping, and witchcraft while mine is more twisting and looping.  So while I didn't use Kelsey's method, she was my inspiration...Aww tender. I miss Klesey and Kelsey... :(
