Ooh! A fun new word!!
serein • \suh-RAN\[the second syllable is nasal] • noun • Definition: Fine rain falling from an apparently cloudless sky, typically observed after sunset.
So I found this wondrous word in wordsmith.org's word-a-day archive and it made my heart flutter! I found it under the week themed "There is a word for it". While the definition is purely literal I severely enjoy pretending I'm deep and digging further into the denotation.
When I read this word I made an automatic metaphor of rain being trails throughout my life. While it's only a fine rain it comes in the darkest time of day after the sun has set. With the sun down and the drizzle ongoing the temperature is uncomfortably low and nothing can get dry. In addition to the lack of light and warmth the sky is clear of clouds. Upon looking up at the sky, one sees the stars and moon. The only indications of rain are the relentless drops and the sodden earth.
Now for the metaphorical view. (I guess it would be more of conceit (extended metaphor) than metaphor). Every member of the human race faces trials, some big, some small. In the case of my conceit these trials are small (fine rain). However even though they are small they come at the darkest time of life (after sunset). Without the sun these small trials build and leave you worn down, discouraged, and with a feeling of doom (cold, sodden earth unable to get dry). Worst of all, those around you can't see the signs (cloudless sky). They see a fellow human being just living life. What other fail to see is the unescapable cold that grips your very soul.
That is my attempt at being deep. I hope that I can shine light on those experiencing serein and help them to escape the endless cold. Be a light to battle the serein covering the world as you warm others with your goodness.
